THE GIFT
Why Gongjindan says the right thing
Search for a gift for Korean parents and the suggestions run from fruit boxes and red ginseng to massage chairs, and any of them will be received with thanks. When the parents are your partner's, though, and the visit is one of the first, a gift is also read for something it does not say out loud: whether you took the trouble to learn what this family, and this country, holds in regard.
Gongjindan answers that question better than most things you can carry in one hand. The name has stood in Korean medicine since Dongui Bogam, the medical classic of the Joseon court, recorded it in 1610,1 and it is still used in Korea today against fatigue.2 A gift that has to be explained at the door is a gift half given. This one is understood before the wrapping comes off, and what it says is not "I bought something nice" but "I care how you are," in a vocabulary their generation grew up with.
There is one more thing in it, and it is what I would point to if you asked me why this gift works. At DEAR, Gongjindan is made for a person, not taken off a shelf. When you bring your parents in, I take their pulse and ask about their sleep, appetite and digestion, and go through the medications they are on (the pharmacy bag itself is fine to bring), all in Korean, and set how many pills to make and how they should be taken around what I find. For parents, the gift begins with a visit in which a doctor's attention is entirely on them. For a son- or daughter-in-law from abroad, bringing them to that visit says more than any box.
WHAT IT DOES
What Gongjindan does for your parents
Dongui Bogam states the aim of the formula in a single line: hold the body's root energy steady so that water rises and fire descends, and the five organs settle into harmony on their own, leaving illness no way in.1 In the language of Korean medicine, that is the work of building back what the years and a busy life draw down, rather than whipping a tired body into running faster for a week. It is why, when parents start to say they have less energy than they used to, Gongjindan is the name that comes up first.
Modern research has begun to measure that old claim. In a 2018 Korean trial, healthy men took either Gongjindan or an identical-looking placebo after two nights of short sleep. In the first round, those taking Gongjindan reported clearly less fatigue than those on the placebo, and falling asleep came more easily.2 The direction is the one the old text describes: a tired body brought back onto its feet.
Roles as summarized in a 2020 study of the Dongui Bogam formula.1
Deer antler lifts and musk opens the way and brings what has risen back down, so the two work as opposite axes; Angelica root builds the blood they move, and Cornus fruit keeps the whole from spinning loose. At the visit I look at what your parents' tiredness looks like now: how they sleep, how they eat, which part of the day is hardest. That is how I set the number of pills and the way to take them, so the gift fits the person who opens it.
AT DEAR
Why DEAR's Gongjindan works as a gift and for your own health
Every Gongjindan I compound under that name contains real musk, legally imported with its CITES paperwork and quality certificate.3 At the consultation I tell you how much musk went into the pills and the content of muscone, its main active component. Deer antler comes in whole, with its import certificate, and is ground here in the clinic, so I know exactly which part went in. The pills are generously sized, wrapped in pure gold leaf and sealed in jars, and they go home in a box we designed ourselves, in a silver lattice or a green leaf pattern.
I do not make a gift version. The gold leaf, the jar and the box are the same whether the pills go to your in-laws or stay in your own bag, and so is everything inside them. What changes is only whose pulse I took. So if you are the one who has been running on short sleep through a Seoul winter, the visit is the same: I examine you and make yours. I hold Gongjindan to one rule: if I would not give it to my own family made this way, I do not want my name on it.

There is no coordinator between us. The person who examines your parents is the person who grinds the herbs and rolls the pills.
Your parents hear everything from me in Korean, and you hear it in English. Nothing is lost in between, and nobody has to play interpreter at the table.
IN THE CLINIC
How each pill is made
Compounding happens in the evenings after clinic hours and on weekends. I never knead several people's Gongjindan in one batch and divide it up; each prescription is made on its own, because even at the same ratio the dough changes with the day's temperature and humidity, and checking one person's share by hand is the surest way to keep the amount exact. Musk's aroma is part of what it is, so I make only what has been prescribed, when it has been prescribed, rather than a stock that sits waiting.
01 · CHECKThe herbs, before anything elseMusk arrives with its import documents and quality certificate, and I check the herb itself again before it is used.
02 · GRIND AND WEIGHGround here, weighed per personWhole deer antler is ground in the clinic and the powders are weighed for one prescription, with a little extra to allow for what is lost in rolling.

03 · ROLL AND GILDRolled by hand, then wrapped in goldThe dough is kneaded with gloves on and rolled into pills, then each one is wrapped in pure gold leaf to keep air and moisture away from the musk.
04 · SEAL AND BOXSealed jars, a box we designedThe pills go into jars sealed under the lid, then into DEAR's own box with the written guide for the person taking them.
"Two people ordered 30 pills and one ordered 20. Each order was compounded separately at a different time, so nothing got mixed and every order came out to the exact amount."

HANDING IT OVER
When you hand it over
Your parents will know the name. What is worth saying as you hand it over is how this one is taken, because Gongjindan is not swallowed with water like a tablet. It is chewed slowly so that its taste and aroma come through, on an empty stomach as a rule, followed by a glass of warm water, and the written guide inside the box gives the time of day and the number of days for the person it was made for.
As for the words, nothing elaborate is needed. 건강하세요, geonganghaseyo, "please stay well," is what the gift already means, and from a son- or daughter-in-law who went to the trouble of a doctor's visit, it carries further than any speech. If your parents came to the clinic with you, they will already have heard the rest from me.

BEFORE THE HOLIDAY
Giving it in time, for the holiday or any day
Seollal and the year-end are the busiest seasons for it, but the days Korean parents remember run all year: a birthday, a 60th (hwangap) or 70th (chilsun), and Parents' Day on May 8. Each order is compounded fresh in the clinic and takes a few days. If you are aiming for a year-end visit, or for Seollal, which falls in early February in 2027, book a little ahead rather than in the last week. If your parents live outside Seoul, or outside Korea, I consult with them by voice call in Korean instead, and once the pills are ready we ship them to their door.

MUSK
Musk, beyond the milligrams
Gongjindan is often sold by a single number: how many milligrams of musk are in one pill. The original formula has no "one pill" at all. It fixes a ratio, musk at one twenty-fifth of the herbs, and tells you to roll the mixture into pills the size of a wutong seed and take seventy to a hundred at a time,1 so 100 mg of musk in a large pill and 100 mg in a small one are the same figure and different proportions.
The musk itself varies as well. Korea's herbal pharmacopoeia requires dried musk to contain at least 2.0% l-muscone, its main active component,4 and one laboratory analysis of two batches of musk from farmed musk deer found about 1.86% muscone in one and 0.0035% in the other.5 That is why I tell the person taking DEAR Gongjindan where the musk came from, how much went into their pills and what its muscone content is. A gift for parents deserves an answer to all three.

FAQ
Frequently asked questions
What does Gongjindan do?
In Korean medicine, Gongjindan is used to fight fatigue and build strength back up. Dongui Bogam describes it as steadying the body's root energy so that the five organs settle into harmony. In a 2018 Korean trial, people who took it after two nights of short sleep reported less fatigue than those on a placebo. At the visit I set how many pills to take and when, around the person taking it.
Do my parents need to come in, or can I buy it for them?
Bring them in if you can. I take their pulse, explain everything to them in Korean and to you in English, and set how many pills to make and how to take them around their health and the medications they take. That visit is part of the gift. If they cannot make it to Seoul, I consult with them by voice call in Korean and we ship the pills to their door, in Korea or overseas.
How long does it take?
Each order is compounded fresh in the clinic and takes a few days. We tell you the ready date at the visit, so before a holiday, book a little ahead.
Does DEAR Gongjindan contain real musk?
Yes. Every Gongjindan I compound under that name contains musk legally imported with its CITES paperwork and quality labeling checked. At the consultation I explain how much musk went into it and its muscone content.
Can it be shipped to my parents?
Yes. You can pick it up at the clinic, or we ship it anywhere in Korea or overseas, including the United States, once it is ready. Rules for products containing musk differ from country to country, so tell us where it is going when you book.
How many pills come in a box?
Orders are counted in pills rather than boxes; in the compounding note in this column, two people ordered 30 and one ordered 20. I set the number at the consultation, around the person and how long they will take it.
Is it covered by insurance, and how much is it?
Gongjindan is not covered by national health insurance. The price is explained at the consultation, once we know how many pills you need, and it is the same for Korean and international patients.
How do I book?
Appointments are given priority, so we recommend booking before your visit. The most reliable way is an Instagram DM to @dearhani__, or you can call us at +82-2-3486-1777.
